Volunteer and Teacher 1st Meeting Checklist

Teachers and Volunteers: please use the checklist to help guide your site-based orientation before volunteering begins. This step is not only required, but will help set you both up for success in your new partnership.

Introductions

  • Compare your schedules for compatibility (contact BSV if not compatible and we will help you find other volunteer placement options.)
  • CAL students: note school schedule differences, length of commitment, and special requirements (letter of recommendation, hours, subjects/activities, etc.)
  • Share your goals in volunteering & interests/talents/skills as classroom resources.

Rules and Expectations

  • Discuss school rules, emergency procedures + get a copy of the bell schedule.
  • Review classroom rules and policies (ie: classroom management plan)
  • Review the BUSD Volunteer Contract for expectations of volunteers and teachers.

Logistics

  • Location of adult bathrooms + safe place to keep your personal items.
  • What identification to wear while volunteering + how should students address you?
  • Dress code or preferences? (College clothing is welcome; you’re a role model!)
  • How to sign-in and sign-out at school site (may differ by time and day of week)
  • Procedures to follow if you are late, absent, or needing to discontinue volunteering.
  • Exchange contact information and emergency phone numbers in case of schedule changes, and for communicating sick days–cell or direct classroom lines are best.
  • Discuss “plan-of-action” when the teacher is absent and a substitute is in charge.
  • How to be informed of school events, assemblies, news, etc? Sign-up for E-Tree?

Working with Students

  • Discuss “self-starter/proactive” tasks + review classroom “routines”.
  • How you can help support a positive learning environment & student behavior?
  • Teacher recommended strategies for supporting students in the class or program?
  • Students with learning challenges? What accommodations/modifications exist?
  • What are site-approved and/or typical classroom activities?
  • Procedures for taking students out of the classroom for individual work?
