Support Literacy!

Please check this page for updates on one-time-only and special events supporting literacy and reading volunteer opportunities throughout the school district. We will update it as information becomes available from each school site. Also see our “Opportunities” page for general, year-round options and our “Urgent Needs” page for high need and hard to fill placements.

Regular School Year (ongoing needs)

Classroom teachers need help working with students one-on-one and in small groups reading books, asking questions about the reading, checking with them on accuracy, comprehension, fluency or providing support for English learners.

Librarians would love to have help shelving books, preparing book selections for students during classroom visits, reading books one-on-one with students, or helping students find that “just right” book in the library.

Literacy Coaches (aka Reading Coaches or Specialists) also work with students during the school day, but they typically work one-on-one with students who are struggling with literacy, for various reasons. Choose to help literacy coaches and you can the most vulnerable students be successful in school — and find their own joy for reading and learning through reading!

Afterschool Options:

Please also see our after school tutoring program information on the Urgent Needs page. We always have a high need for academic tutors–including reading and literacy–in our afterschools programs Monday-Thursday (no tutoring on Fridays.)

UC Berkeley students: Be a PAID or VOLUNTEER Literacy Tutor in a Berkeley elementary school and work one-on-one with a struggling student! Learn more from the CalCorp website about the BUILD Literacy Tutoring program in our K-5th grade schools, including program and application details. This opportunity is only open to current UC Berkeley students.

Please contact BSV to learn of current opportunities in any of the above options! Students and teachers are waiting for your help….
