“Classroom” (Distance Learning) Volunteers

For three decades, Berkeley Schools Volunteers (BSV) has been connecting the skills, passion, and expertise of community members to the students, teachers, and classrooms of Berkeley’s public schools.

  • BSV volunteers support all ages of learners: we place volunteers in classrooms from preschool to adult school
  • Our volunteers support across subject areas: from reading, math and science to gardening, art, computer science, and Spanish
  • Volunteers support primarily in the mornings and early afternoons, with a few opportunities for late afternoon support (when in-person)

The Match: BSV matches community volunteers only to BUSD “Host Teachers” who request volunteers. We make the matches based on the volunteer’s grade level and subject area preferences, as well as availability.

The Commitment: Volunteers commit to supporting a classroom for a minimum of 1 hour a week for the entire school year, though most BSV volunteers do 2-3 hours/week.

Minors? Volunteers who are ages 16 and 17 (minors) require the signature of a parent or guardian on BSV’s Minor Permission Form

The Timeline: New Volunteer Onboarding for the 2020-21 school year is now closed. We will be starting onboarding for new volunteers for 2021-22 in August.

If you are interested in volunteering for 2021-22 (which we expect will be in-person), please leave us your contact info HERE.
