Summer School Fights the Achievement Gap!

Research has shown many students lose reading skills and academic knowledge over the summer. Over the course of many summers, these years of ‘summer slide’ contribute to the achievement gap that is evident within our school district. The last five summers, BUSD’s special summer programs have made positive steps closing this achievement gap. This summer we hope to improve and expand upon the success of the previous years—and we need volunteers like you to make this a reality!

Summer Programs

Although most programs have confirmed their teachers would love volunteers, we cannot guarantee placements. We will do our best to match you with a teacher needing summer support!

Most students in Berkeley High’s summer program are incoming 11th – 12th graders. All are taking summer classes either to make up credits or to retake a class for an improved grade.

Berkeley High offers a BRIDGE to College program for selected incoming 9th-12th graders identified as ‘at-risk’ of not graduating high school or needing additional support for success in life. The program offers SAT/ACT prep, academic tutoring and team building throughout high school. The program runs for 2 weeks in August, location, date/times TBA. Please contact us and we will put you in touch with the coordinators to learn more. See a fabulous video about the BRIDGE program here. (Password is 2020vision)

How Summer Volunteering Works

Returning Volunteers: if you have been cleared by BSV to volunteer, please complete a Summer Volunteering form below and we will connect you with the appropriate summer school coordinator.

New Volunteers: we do not have any New Volunteer Orientations scheduled for summer term. Make a difference this summer!
