Ensuring Safety and Belonging in Berkeley’s Public Schools

Berkeley’s public schools are built on inclusivity, equity, integrity, and compassion—but these values face growing challenges. A $7 million state budget cut, federal rollbacks, and rising ICE activity in the East Bay have destabilized families, increasing stress, mental health struggles, and widening opportunity gaps.

Schools are more than places of learning; they are spaces where every student should feel safe, supported, and valued. But when that sense of security is shaken, chronic stress makes it harder for students to focus, absorb information, and retain knowledge.

Now more than ever, ensuring that schools remain safe and supportive is critical.

The Berkeley Public Schools Fund, a community-funded nonprofit, works alongside educators, families, and community members to strengthen systems that foster safety and belonging. Through Equity Grants, STEM initiatives, and volunteer programs, the Schools Fund helps create the connections and opportunities that allow students to thrive.

The Power of Safe and Supportive Spaces

At King Middle School, the Young Men’s Development Community, funded by an Equity Grant from the Schools Fund, provides students with a safe space for mentorship, self-reflection, connection, and growth. Seventh-grader Akeiji Salinas shares its impact:

“Something that made me feel more connected was how we have some of the same struggles… It teaches you how to do better as a young man and how to respect others,”

For many students, being seen and heard by a caring teacher makes a difference. BJ, the leader of the Young Men’s group, is one of those teachers. For Akeiji,

“BJ is different. He listens, he treats everyone equally, and makes us feel heard.”

Programs like this help students develop resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging that carries into the classroom and beyond.

Expanding Access to STEM Education

That sense of belonging is just as critical in STEM, where students of color, girls, and nonbinary students have long been underrepresented. The Schools Fund’s STEM initiatives break barriers, providing hands-on experiences that build confidence and expand pathways into these fields.

“I loved the self-esteem boost the staff gave for our work,”one student shared.

A mentor added,“It was rewarding to inspire kids to be interested in STEM and see them believe in their own abilities.”

Fostering Belonging Through Community and Representation

Beyond academics, belonging means knowing there is a community that sees and supports students. Just last year, the Schools Fund supported over 30 affinity groups, serving more than 600 students, staff, and families

At Berkeley High, CAS Support Groups provide an affirming space for trans students. One student commented,“It’s one of the only ways to hang out with other trans students at Berkeley High.”

Educators also benefit. The Black Staff Collaborative, backed by the Schools Fund, provides mentorship and connection for Black teachers, ensuring students see diverse role models in their classrooms.

One participant reflected,“I loved getting to meet other Black teachers in BUSD! We need each other because this profession is hard.”

A Community-Powered Commitment to Student Well-Being

These initiatives only exist because of community support. As a community-funded nonprofit, the Schools Fund fills critical gaps where public resources fall short. Without additional funding, affinity groups, mentorship programs, and academic enrichment opportunities would not be possible.

The challenges facing students today—from financial instability to systemic inequities—are urgent. But the solution is clear: students thrive when they feel safe, supported, and connected in their schools.

By investing in mentorship, inclusive spaces, and expanded opportunities, Berkeley’s schools remain places where every child can learn and grow without barriers.

The time to act is now. A stronger, more equitable Berkeley starts with us. When we show up, every child’s future shines brighter.

The challenges facing Berkeley’s students are urgent, but together, we can ensure that every child feels safe, supported, and empowered to succeed. Donate today and learn how you can help sustain these vital programs at BerkeleyPublicSchoolsFund.org.
