BSV’s School Support Team

Berkeley Schools Volunteers has been providing on-site volunteer support to BUSD schools, as needed, since the onset of COVID-19. In partnership with site leaders and staff, this team orchestrates the recruitment and engagement of volunteers for one-time school support events.

Goals: BSV’s School Support team aims to be responsive to and supportive of emerging requests from BUSD schools while working in collaboration with existing school site teams, including the PTA. All the while, this BSV team remains committed to the safety of volunteers, staff, students, and families.

Scope of Projects: During the spring of 2020, BSV school support volunteers:

  • Wiped and distributed thousands of laptop computers
  • Assembled and distributed school supplies bags for students, preK-12th
  • Assembled gardening kits for students, preK-5th
  • Supported site leaders with school close-down across multiple sites
  • Supported teachers with classroom clean-up across multiple sites

Support: Volunteers are typically greeted and oriented upon arrival by school site staff, assigned safety equipment as needed, and introduced to their task, team, and/or work area.

Skills Required:   BSV welcomes volunteers who are comfortable being out in public and are able to maintain social distance at all times. Volunteers who are flexible, patient, and service-oriented are particularly well-suited to these tasks. BSV requests that volunteers in high-risk categories support our work safely from home.
